Vitamin D(VITD)

divider

Vitamin D (VITD) is a fat-soluble vitamin crucial for maintaining bone health by facilitating calcium absorption in the gut. It exists in two main forms: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol), with D3 being more effective in raising and maintaining vitamin D levels in the body. The skin synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, particularly UVB rays, making it unique among vitamins. However, dietary sources, including fatty fish, fortified foods, and supplements, are essential, especially in regions with limited sunlight.

Beyond bone health, vitamin D plays roles in immune function, inflammation reduction, and potentially protecting against certain chronic diseases, such as heart disease and some cancers. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to conditions like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, underscoring its importance in overall health. Regular monitoring and supplementation may be necessary for individuals at risk of deficiency.
