Folate (FOLA)

divider

Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin vital for DNA synthesis, cell division, and growth. It plays a key role in producing red blood cells and preventing anemia. Folate is particularly crucial during periods of rapid growth, such as pregnancy and infancy.

In pregnant women, adequate folate intake helps prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus, such as spina bifida and anencephaly. The synthetic form of folate, folic acid, is often used in supplements and fortified foods to ensure adequate intake.

Natural sources of folate include leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fortified grains. A deficiency in folate can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, and impaired cognitive function. It may also cause elevated homocysteine levels, which are associated with cardiovascular diseases. Ensuring sufficient folate intake through diet or supplements is crucial for overall health.
