Triglycerides (TRI)

divider

Triglycerides (TRI) are a type of fat (lipid) found in the blood, playing a crucial role in energy storage and metabolism. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn’t need immediately into triglycerides, which are stored in fat cells. Later, hormones release these triglycerides for energy between meals.

High levels of triglycerides in the blood can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and pancreatitis. They are often associated with other conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Factors that can raise triglyceride levels include a high-calorie diet, excessive sugar or alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle, and certain genetic disorders.

Managing triglyceride levels involves adopting a healthy lifestyle: a balanced diet low in simple sugars and unhealthy fats, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and, if necessary, medication.
