Sodium (NA)

divider

Sodium (Na) is an essential mineral and electrolyte crucial for various bodily functions. It helps regulate fluid balance, ensuring that water is distributed appropriately within and outside cells. Sodium also plays a key role in nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and maintaining blood pressure.

Most dietary sodium comes from salt (sodium chloride), commonly added to foods during processing, cooking, or at the table. While sodium is necessary for health, excessive intake can lead to high blood pressure (hypertension), which increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. The recommended daily intake of sodium varies by age and health status, but many health organizations suggest limiting it to around 2,300 mg per day, with an ideal goal of 1,500 mg for most adults.

Maintaining a balanced intake of sodium is crucial for overall health, emphasizing the importance of moderation and choosing low-sodium foods when possible.
