SHBG

divider

Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a glycoprotein produced primarily in the liver, playing a critical role in regulating the bioavailability of sex hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen. SHBG binds to these hormones in the bloodstream, controlling the amount of free, active hormone that can interact with cells and tissues. Higher levels of SHBG reduce the availability of these hormones, while lower levels increase it.

SHBG levels can be influenced by various factors, including age, sex, hormonal status, and health conditions. For instance, SHBG levels tend to be higher in women than in men and generally increase with age. Conditions like hyperthyroidism, liver disease, and obesity can also impact SHBG levels.

Abnormal SHBG levels can be associated with various health issues, including hormone-related disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and type 2 diabetes, making it a valuable marker in clinical assessments of hormonal balance.
