Phosphate (PHOS)

divider

Phosphate (PHOS) is an essential mineral that plays a key role in various biological processes. It is a major component of bones and teeth, working alongside calcium to maintain their strength and structure. Phosphate is also crucial for energy production, as it forms part of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that stores and transfers energy in cells. Additionally, phosphate is involved in the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and cell membranes, making it vital for cell growth and repair.

In the bloodstream, phosphate levels are tightly regulated by the kidneys, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D to ensure balance with calcium. Phosphate is naturally found in many foods, including dairy products, meat, nuts, and grains. Imbalances in phosphate levels can lead to health issues; low levels (hypophosphatemia) can cause muscle weakness and bone pain, while high levels (hyperphosphatemia) may lead to cardiovascular and kidney problems, especially in individuals with kidney disease.
