Calcium (CA)

divider

Calcium (Ca) is a vital mineral in the body, crucial for bone health, nerve function, muscle contractions, and blood clotting. In a blood test, calcium levels are measured to assess various health conditions. For females, normal blood calcium levels typically range from 8.5 to 10.2 mg/dL, though this can vary slightly depending on age and specific lab standards.

Abnormal calcium levels can indicate various health issues. Elevated calcium (hypercalcemia) might suggest hyperparathyroidism, certain cancers, or excessive vitamin D intake. Low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) could be due to vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease, or hypoparathyroidism.

In women, maintaining balanced calcium levels is especially important for preventing osteoporosis, particularly after menopause when bone density naturally decreases. Regular monitoring of calcium, along with other related markers like vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH), helps in maintaining bone health and overall metabolic function.
