Globulin (GLOB)

Globulins are a diverse group of proteins found in blood plasma that play essential roles in various physiological functions. They are classified into several types, including alpha, beta, and gamma globulins.

 

Alpha globulins, such as alpha-1 antitrypsin, are involved in inhibiting enzymes that can damage tissues. Beta globulins, including transferrin and beta-lipoprotein, transport iron and lipids throughout the body. Gamma globulins, which include antibodies (immunoglobulins), are critical for immune defense, identifying and neutralizing pathogens.

 

Globulins are measured as part of a total protein test and can provide insights into health conditions. Abnormal levels may indicate issues like liver disease, kidney disorders, or immune system dysfunction. For instance, low levels of certain globulins may suggest protein loss or malabsorption, while elevated levels might signal chronic inflammation or infection. Regular testing helps in diagnosing and monitoring various health conditions.
