Creatinine (CREA)

divider

Creatinine (CREA) is a waste product formed by the breakdown of creatine, which is found in muscles. In a blood test, creatinine levels are used to assess kidney function. For females, the normal range is typically lower than in males due to generally lower muscle mass. Normal creatinine levels for adult females usually range from 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL, though this can vary slightly depending on the laboratory.

Elevated creatinine levels may indicate impaired kidney function, which can result from conditions such as chronic kidney disease, dehydration, or other health issues affecting the kidneys. Conversely, low creatinine levels are less common but can occur in cases of decreased muscle mass, malnutrition, or pregnancy. Monitoring creatinine levels is important in evaluating kidney health, and any abnormal results should be further investigated by a healthcare professional.
