Gamma GT

divider

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in various tissues, with the highest concentrations in the liver. It plays a critical role in the metabolism of glutathione, a potent antioxidant, and helps in the detoxification process by transferring amino acids across cellular membranes.

A GGT blood test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood, often used to assess liver function and detect liver damage or disease. Elevated GGT levels can indicate liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease. It can also be a marker of alcohol consumption, as chronic alcohol use can increase GGT levels. In addition to liver disorders, high GGT levels might be associated with other conditions like diabetes or cardiovascular disease. However, GGT levels should be interpreted in conjunction with other tests and clinical information for accurate diagnosis and management.
